Do you have children over 8 years old? Maybe teenagers? Pause for one moment, and ask yourself when did you last have family portraits done? Was it not long after your little one started walking? Or maybe when baby number two joined your family. My guess is at some point after that, there is a gap…a period of time where our kids don’t seem to change as quickly, and life becomes busy with activities. That is the phase I’m in with my children, and I will confess, I’m guilty of the same. As I stop and look at my kids, and as I meet my amazing clients, I am reminded how important it is to continue to document those kids and adolescent years. They slip between our fingers all too fast, and it is so wonderful to have the memories to reflect on in years to come.
So I encourage you, book your family photos for this fall! If you are in Edmonton, I would love to work with you. There is still time to take advantage of the ‘EARLYBOOKINGPROMO‘ and receive a complimentary set of holiday cards as well! September dates are limited already, so don’t delay and contact me today!
Their first look at Hotel MacDonald, then these two lovebirds, walked down the aisle and said their vows. Their closest friends and family joined them at St. Joseph’s Basilica to witness the exchange, before they jetted off to the sun and sand for the big show and to say their ‘I do’s‘ on the beach.
Summer is here! Long days, sunshine, and days spent at the pool (Reminder: make sure you take advantage of the City of Edmonton’s free outdoor pools again!) Tuesday after a long weekend, has us all sleeping like baby Ainslie when she came to visit me in the studio! I hope everyone one had an amazing Canada Day long weekend though. We celebrated with friends and then walked down Edmonton’s river valley in the evening to watch the fireworks.
If you want to know the symbolic meaning behind the dandelions next to Ainslie, go and see her Mom’s maternity photos and read the beautiful story.

Those first few days with your newborn at home can be such a blur. Filled with sleepless nights, diapers, laundry, and lots of coffee. They are also days filled with a swaddled baby snug in your arms, kisses and cuddles, and the beginning of memories being made. The nursery so carefully prepared for those late night feeds, and books to read. The couch he will soon learn to pull himself up on and cruise along, as he learns to take his first steps. Your bed that he will crawl into when he has a bad dream in the middle of the night. Coming from one mother to another, it all feels like it happens in the blink of an eye. So take a moment, let me capture those first few days at home for you, so you can look back. Those moments you can’t help but smile from ear to ear as you stare in wonder at his little face. The tiny details, like his fingers and toes, and how he fits so perfectly into your arms. No matter how tired, and far away those first few days seem, I promise I will create memories that will take you back in an instant, and fill your heart with joy.

So I will tell you a secret, and if you have followed this blog and my work for any length of time, this shouldn’t really come as a surprise. Here it is…I’m not a writer! My high school teacher and university English professor would be able to share documents that support that too, lol. Every time I share a session, I struggle to find words to match the feelings I have when I look at the photos that were created. I never seem to be able to articulate the fun and the magic that happened during the session, and how truly wonderful my clients are, while other photographers seem to be able to write beautiful eloquent paragraphs with ease.
But I’m not other photographers. I am me. So I chose to let the photographs I create tell the story instead. Each moment I capture, each photo I create is a piece of your unique story. So with that here is the story of Rui and his Mom. You can feel the love between them, and the fun we had together.
I want to tell your story as well! Are you in the Edmonton area, message me here so we can talk. I will also be in Kelowna B.C from July 13th - 18th. If you are in Kelowna, I have a couple of spaces open for family photography sessions and would love to meet you.
First I photographed big brother Harlen, three years ago, and then I had the honour of photographing the newest member of their family, sweet little Rhone! It was really wonderful to have this family back in the studio, and such an honour to be able to have photographed both of their boys as newborn babies! Rhone slept like a dream and was so snuggly, but I predict that Mom is going to have a pretty busy house as these two boys grow up together. I see so many adventures between these too!
Just a quick note to all of Edmonton Moms-to-be, I am currently booking up to December 2018 now for newborn baby photography session. This includes both studio sessions as well as lifestyle sessions.
This is the first in our new ‘Asked and Answered: Newborn Photography’ series. Having a new baby comes with so many changes and questions about everything from diapers and feeding to sleeping. Researching newborn photography shouldn’t be an overwhelming process, so we are here to makes things a little simpler for all you new Moms and Dads.
Our first question today, is ‘When should I book my newborn session?’. If you have been researching photographers, and you have your heart set on one (and Edmonton has lots of amazing newborn photographers!) then I recommend booking during your second trimester to guarantee your photographer has room. For example, I typically book only a certain amount of due dates per month, since babies always have a little bit of their own schedule as to when they arrive. That being said, I typically receive at least a couple of phone calls each week from brand new Edmonton Moms, whose baby has already been born, and they are wondering if it is too late to book a newborn session? I always try my best to fit these Moms and babies into my schedule, as I know how important newborn photography is, especially once as a mom you see how fast your baby changes in those first few weeks. Sometimes when booking a session after the baby is already born that means that they are older than the typical 5-14 days old that many photographers prefer to only shoot in, however, don’t worry or panic! I’ve photographed and snuggled nearly 200 of Edmonton’s newest residents over the years, many being over two weeks old. You can have the confidence that when you visit the studio, and your baby is a little older, we will still capture all of those precious new details and create beautiful portraits that will last a lifetime.
Do you have other questions about newborn photography? Let me know what you would like to know more about in the comment section below, or you can contact me here if you would like to book your newborn session for 2018.
Now here are a few of my favourites from little Alexandra’s recent newborn photos! She was wide awake, and so beautiful, just like her Mom!
