Those first few days with your newborn at home can be such a blur. Filled with sleepless nights, diapers, laundry, and lots of coffee. They are also days filled with a swaddled baby snug in your arms, kisses and cuddles, and the beginning of memories being made. The nursery so carefully prepared for those late night feeds, and books to read. The couch he will soon learn to pull himself up on and cruise along, as he learns to take his first steps. Your bed that he will crawl into when he has a bad dream in the middle of the night. Coming from one mother to another, it all feels like it happens in the blink of an eye. So take a moment, let me capture those first few days at home for you, so you can look back. Those moments you can’t help but smile from ear to ear as you stare in wonder at his little face. The tiny details, like his fingers and toes, and how he fits so perfectly into your arms. No matter how tired, and far away those first few days seem, I promise I will create memories that will take you back in an instant, and fill your heart with joy.

So I will tell you a secret, and if you have followed this blog and my work for any length of time, this shouldn’t really come as a surprise. Here it is…I’m not a writer! My high school teacher and university English professor would be able to share documents that support that too, lol. Every time I share a session, I struggle to find words to match the feelings I have when I look at the photos that were created. I never seem to be able to articulate the fun and the magic that happened during the session, and how truly wonderful my clients are, while other photographers seem to be able to write beautiful eloquent paragraphs with ease.
But I’m not other photographers. I am me. So I chose to let the photographs I create tell the story instead. Each moment I capture, each photo I create is a piece of your unique story. So with that here is the story of Rui and his Mom. You can feel the love between them, and the fun we had together.
I want to tell your story as well! Are you in the Edmonton area, message me here so we can talk. I will also be in Kelowna B.C from July 13th - 18th. If you are in Kelowna, I have a couple of spaces open for family photography sessions and would love to meet you.
First I photographed big brother Harlen, three years ago, and then I had the honour of photographing the newest member of their family, sweet little Rhone! It was really wonderful to have this family back in the studio, and such an honour to be able to have photographed both of their boys as newborn babies! Rhone slept like a dream and was so snuggly, but I predict that Mom is going to have a pretty busy house as these two boys grow up together. I see so many adventures between these too!
Just a quick note to all of Edmonton Moms-to-be, I am currently booking up to December 2018 now for newborn baby photography session. This includes both studio sessions as well as lifestyle sessions.
This is the first in our new ‘Asked and Answered: Newborn Photography’ series. Having a new baby comes with so many changes and questions about everything from diapers and feeding to sleeping. Researching newborn photography shouldn’t be an overwhelming process, so we are here to makes things a little simpler for all you new Moms and Dads.
Our first question today, is ‘When should I book my newborn session?’. If you have been researching photographers, and you have your heart set on one (and Edmonton has lots of amazing newborn photographers!) then I recommend booking during your second trimester to guarantee your photographer has room. For example, I typically book only a certain amount of due dates per month, since babies always have a little bit of their own schedule as to when they arrive. That being said, I typically receive at least a couple of phone calls each week from brand new Edmonton Moms, whose baby has already been born, and they are wondering if it is too late to book a newborn session? I always try my best to fit these Moms and babies into my schedule, as I know how important newborn photography is, especially once as a mom you see how fast your baby changes in those first few weeks. Sometimes when booking a session after the baby is already born that means that they are older than the typical 5-14 days old that many photographers prefer to only shoot in, however, don’t worry or panic! I’ve photographed and snuggled nearly 200 of Edmonton’s newest residents over the years, many being over two weeks old. You can have the confidence that when you visit the studio, and your baby is a little older, we will still capture all of those precious new details and create beautiful portraits that will last a lifetime.
Do you have other questions about newborn photography? Let me know what you would like to know more about in the comment section below, or you can contact me here if you would like to book your newborn session for 2018.
Now here are a few of my favourites from little Alexandra’s recent newborn photos! She was wide awake, and so beautiful, just like her Mom!
This little girl and her parents drove over an hour and a half to visit my studio for their newborn photos in Edmonton! Not only that, but this precious little girl isn’t nearly this tiny anymore either because these photos are from a couple of years back now. But her parents will always have these photos as memories of those first few days to remember how tiny she was. Creating those moments is my ‘why’. Why I do what I do, why I use my camera as a tool to document life’s important moments. Life changes so quickly! From my unique perspective, every photograph I create captures a memory for my clients to look back and reflect on when that moment has passed. I love what I do, and I love what I am able to create something special for each family I have the privilege of working with. I would love to work with your family, and to connect with you and talk. You can message me here or email me directly at info [at] christywells.com
Outside in Edmonton right now, the leaves are just starting to emerge and everything is turning so pretty and green! It’s the time of year when soccer starts, ice cream trucks can be heard just as you are trying to put kids to bed, and everyone just seems so much happier because of all the extra daylight we get! Summer is finally just around the corner Edmonton! And after that incredibly long winter this year, I feel like we all are going to take advantage and enjoy each and every minute of it!
The furthers thing on most of our minds right now is fall! This year booking for 2018 fall family photography will open in early July. At this time I am booking through to the end of August for family photos. If you are looking for newborn photos in Edmonton, however, you can contact me and book at any time for the month that you are due, don’t delay to ensure I have room for you!
And with all that talk of fall, take a peek at this gorgeous family and their three handsome boys! So much laughter and giggles during their family photos!
Meet sweet little Hannah. The baby of the family, and so incredibly loved and adored by everyone. Her Mom had one special request for her newborn photography session, and that was a way to incorporate a rainbow. It was way to celebrate and remember at the same time. There is always hope at the end of the rainbow.
This family of five, added lifestyle family portraits to their newborn session in the studio. So we had some fun, shared some laughs, and made memories…which is what any portrait session is about! Are you in Edmonton, and interested in adding lifestyle portraits to you studio newborn session? Contact me here and we can talk and I will help you to figure out what is the best options for you!
Adrean had a vision for her maternity session. She hoped for a field of dandelions blowing in the wind. For her a symbol to honour and remember her angel baby. Mother nature in Edmonton, had other plans, and put our spring on hold. However, near the end of our time together, it began to snow big puffy white snowflakes…almost like the seeds of a dandelion blowing in the wind, surrounding them. I can’t help but think how their little angel was looking down on them and smiling <3 Dont
